The Journey

Six days from beginner to skier

Arrival

Do's, Don'ts & the Concept of Skiing

A theory class walking you through the do's and don'ts and the whole concept of basic skiing — touch-based on the techniques to come.

Basic stanceGlidingSide steppingKick turn
Day 01

Snow Plough & Plough Turns

Form a 'pizza slice' or 'V' shape, pushing the tails apart so the inside edges engage — the foundation for controlling speed and stopping. Then initiate plough turns by pressuring one ski's inside edge.

Pizza / V shapeInside edgesWeight transferEdge control
Day 02

Kick Turn

A stationary 180° change of direction: lift one ski tail, swing it around, plant it, then bring the other to match. Essential mobility for cat tracks, steep traverses and tight spaces.

Day 03

Traverse Across the Slope

Ski across the slope at an angle rather than straight down. Skis stay parallel as you lean slightly into the hill to engage your uphill edges and stop sliding sideways.

Day 04

Stem Turn

The bridge between snow plough and parallel skiing. From a traverse, briefly stem the uphill ski into a small wedge, transfer your weight onto it to complete the turn, and finish with skis parallel.

Day 05

Uphill Christie / Uphill Swing

A finishing manoeuvre: after completing a turn, deliberately let your skis skid sideways so they point more uphill, using the rising slope to slow and stop. Builds controlled skidding and rotary skills.

Day 06

First Phase Gondola & Side Slip

The ultimate day: skiing from the first phase of the Gondola and mastering the side slip. Flatten the edges to slide down the fall line, re-engage to stop — an amazing ski experience, and your beginner certification.

Skiing in Gulmarg above Gulmarg with the Gondola behind

Why Gulmarg

The best mountain in India to learn on

Gulmarg is a rare thing — a world-class big mountain with a beginner's heart. The Gondola is one of the highest cable cars on Earth, opening 1,300 vertical metres of terrain above wide, forgiving learning slopes minutes from your hotel.

Cold, dry Himalayan powder, uncrowded pistes and a season that runs mid-December to late March make it the ideal place to learn to ski — whether it's your first day on snow or your fiftieth.

A Day on the Mountain

How your day unfolds

Morning warm-up

Meet your coach, fit gear and warm up with drills on the learning slopes while the light is soft and the snow fresh.

Coached sessions & lunch

Two focused coaching blocks on technique, split by a hot mountain lunch and plenty of kahwa to recharge.

Afternoon & video review

Free skis practice, then an evening video review so you can see your progress and set tomorrow's goal.
